Center for Energy-Efficient Computing and Applications

Center for Energy-Efficient Computing and Applications (CECA) in Peking University is a multi-disciplinary research center in Peking University established in 2010 focused on energy-efficient computing and communication as well as their application. It is a special institute in the School of EECS, and is given considerable flexibility in offering faculty compensation and startup packages, evaluating for faculty advancement, and setting up a world-class research environment, with the goal of recruiting and retaining for the best talents in its research areas internationally. The research area in CECA includes energy efficient computing (including but not limited to energy-efficient computing and communication architectures, compilation and system-level software, systems from embedded to data-center scale) and applications (including but not limited to smart grid, mobile computing, and hardware acceleration of computing-intensive applications, such as bioinformatics and design automation).
The initial scope of CECA includes the following research directions:
   ●   Novel energy-efficient technology-driven computing architectures and platforms, including exploration on Computational Reconfigurable Logic Integrated in Processors, exploration of novel architectures enabled by 3D-IC technologies and non-volatile memory technologies.
   ●   Exploration of new energy-efficient applications, such as customized computing for deep learning, image/video processing, mobile healthcare, mobile environment sensing, non-volatile memory in data center, smart sensor networks and Internet of Things. 
The lead & director of CECA is Prof. Jason CONG. Dr. Cong received his B.S. degree in computer science from Peking University in 1985, his M.S. and Ph. D. degrees in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1987 and 1990, respectively. Currently, he is a Chancellor’s Professor at the Computer Science Department of University of California, Los Angeles, Associate Vice Provost for Internationalization, director of Center for Domain-Specific Computing (funded by NSF Expeditions in Computing Award), co-director of UCLA/Peking University Joint Research Institute in Science and Engineering, and co-director of the VLSI CAD Laboratory. He also served as the department chair from 2005 to 2008. Dr. Cong's research interests include computer-aided design of VLSI circuits and systems, design and synthesis of system-on-a-chip, programmable systems, novel computer architectures, nano-systems, and highly scalable algorithms. He has published over 300 research papers and led over 50 research projects in these areas. Dr. Cong received a number of awards and recognitions, including t the Ross J. Martin Award for Excellence in Research from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1989, the NSF Young Investigator Award in 1993, the Northrop Outstanding Junior Faculty Research Award from UCLA in 1993, the ACM/SIGDA Meritorious Service Award in 1998, and the SRC Technical Excellence Award in 2000. He also received five Best Paper Awards selected for the 1995 IEEE Trans. on CAD, the 2005 International Symposium on Physical Design (ISPD), the 2005 ACM Transaction on Design Automation of Electronic Systems, the 2008 International Symposium on High Performance Computer Architecture (HPCA), and 2009 IEEE Symposium on Application Specific Processors (SASP) respectively. He was elected to an IEEE Fellow in 2000 and ACM Fellow in 2008. Dr. Cong is the recipient of the 2010 IEEE Circuits and System (CAS) Society Technical Achievement Award "For seminal contributions to electronic design automation, especially in FPGA synthesis, VLSI interconnect optimization, and physical design automation.". Dr. Cong has graduated 33 PhD students. A number of them are now faculty members in major research universities, including Cornell, Georgia Tech., Peking University, Purdue, SUNY Binghamton, UCLA, UIUC, and UT Austin. Others are taking key R&D or management positions in major EDA/computer/semiconductor companies or being founding members of high-tech startups.
